Step 6
Incubate jars
Incubate your mason jars and monitor them for initial growth.
Step Materials
This is the list of materials needed for this step.
Instructions
Incubation
After you've added agar to the mason jars, store them in a dark and warm place. This guide focuses on using blue oyster mushrooms, so the optimal temperature range is between 70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Growth Progression
Look below to see the documented growth of the blue oyster mycelium. The average temperature throughout all of these photos was 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Day 13 (Break & Shake)
Once the jar has become 20-30% colonized with mycelium, shake the jar to distribute the visible mycelium evenly. Shake the jar against your hand or a soft surface to avoid damaging the mycelium. Shaking the grain should drastically speed up the incubation time.

At this point, your grain is very close to 100% colonization. From here, you have a few options to put your new oyster mushroom spawn to use, such as:
- Expanding Your Spawn: Your colonized grain spawn can easily be used to inoculate another 5 to 10 jars of rye grain.
- Toilet Tissue: Oyster mushroom spawn can be poured on top of boiled toilet tissue to fruit from it. Using tissue with oyster mushrooms can be a fun activity for folks at all different cultivation experience levels.
- Book Growth: Like toilet tissue, oyster mushroom mycelium will easily eat through a book pasteurized with boiling water, eventually growing mushrooms.
- Bucket Tek: The grain spawn can be used to fruit oyster mushrooms in a bucket. This technique can result in greater yields but should be done by folks with more experience.
